What is neem oil?
Neem oil is a natural vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), native to the Indian subcontinent. It has been used in traditional medicine and agriculture for thousands of years — long before synthetic pesticides and chemical shampoos existed.
It has a distinctive earthy, slightly sulphurous smell (think garlic meets peanut butter), which is a sign of its potency. The active compound responsible for most of its benefits is called azadirachtin.
What are the benefits of neem oil for dogs?
Neem oil has several well-documented properties that make it useful in dog care:

- Always dilute — pure, undiluted neem oil is too concentrated for direct skin application. It should always be blended into a carrier oil or formulated product before use
- Avoid the eyes, nose, and mouth — as with any topical product, keep away from mucous membranes
- Don't use on puppies under 12 weeks — their skin barrier is still developing
- Patch test first — apply a small amount to a less sensitive area and wait 24 hours before full use, especially for dogs with known sensitivities
- Ingestion in large amounts — while small amounts from licking groomed fur are generally not a concern, neem oil should not be ingested in large quantities. If your dog is a dedicated self-groomer, opt for a properly formulated product with appropriate dilution
What about cats?
This is important: neem oil is not recommended for cats. Cats metabolise certain compounds differently to dogs and humans, and essential oils and plant-based compounds that are safe for dogs can be toxic to cats. Always check with your vet before using any plant-based product on a cat.
